A new “Golden Era” in the Myanmar Oil and Gas industry?

On Tuesday, 24 May 2016, the Myanmar-Norway Business Council arranged an oil and gas evening focusing on opportunities in the Myanmar market. 45 participants including ten flown in from abroad enjoyed listening to the key speakers, all leaders within Myanmar’s oil and gas sector:

  • Daniel Clery, Country Manager, Woodside Myanmar spoke about their recently completed drilling campaign, what were the challenges, and the results so far. Woodside is the first international oil company to drill in the Rakhine basin deepwater. They have already announced two new gas discoveries this year.
  • Michael Hlaing Myint, Country Manager, Schlumberger spoke on the oil service industry in Myanmar, including the outlook for the industry, what services are offered and the operational challenges
  • Helge Gabrielsen, Country Manager, Statoil Myanmar will gave an update of its plans and activities in Myanmar and also gave some perspectives on opportunities and challenges for deepwater development in the country.
  • Fianlly, Hnin Phyu Phyu Aung, Managing Director, Lion Energy, presented opportunities for LNG in Myanmar. She gave an update on the current situation and outlined future opportunities in the LNG and natural gas sector in Myanmar.
